BBP Media Birmingham Business Post News, Clifton Packaging Group LTD.

From its base in Leicester, packaging manufacturer Clifton Packaging is sowing seeds to conquer the world with its range of unique products.

The business was one of only two UK-based manufacturers to receive a prestigious WorldStar at the premier global packaging awards of the same name, which were organised by the industry’s foremost trade body, the World Packaging Organisation. This was given for the company’s development of the Hopcraft pouch for global brewing giant SAB Miller.

Not content with that, Managing Director Shahid Sheikh, ODE was just a few weeks later honoured with the Manufacturer of the Year award from Asian Business, and this remarkable run of success was topped off when Clifton Packaging found Its way onto the London Stock Exchange’s list of ‘1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain’, for its achievements as one of the latest-growing SMEs throughout the UK and Europe.

'To be recognised by the London Stock Exchange group is fantastic news and a testament for the hard work and commitment put in by all at #TeamClifton,” said Mr Sheikh.

And the awards have kept coming - including Insider Made in the Midlands Manufacturer of the Year. and two accolades for Mr Sheikh himself from the Institute of Directors, who named him both SME Director of the Year and International Trade Director of the Year.

Innovation and creativity are the watchwords which drive Clifton Packaging’s ongoing research and development efforts, and its string of awards help bring this work to the attention of a global audience - few businesses have the reach of someone like SABMiller, and new innovations which promise to widen the availability of its products still further are highly prized.

Clifton Packaging was founded in 1981, initially as a wholesaler of plain carrier bags and paper bags supplying shops. Today, it remains a privately-owned family business, but has switched its focus to manufacturing packaging for the food sector, along with the specialised machinery needed to make it. With 75 employees at its Leicester facility. the company now boasts annual sales of more than £20 million.

“We have always specialised in serving the retail trader, and in particular manufacturing flexible packaging for the FMCG sector, and are committed to staying at the forefront of innovation by developing new packaging solutions which give our clients an edge in their respective market places,” Mr Sheikh added. “For us, it’s all about moving forward and continuous innovation.”

And to prove this, Clifton achieved certification for a range of in-house produced openable bags which can withstand temperatures of up to 225C for two hours, produced alongside another of its major partners, and making Clifton currently the only company in the UK who can supply Ovenable printed bags which can withstand these high temperatures fully manufactured in-house. There’s another ambitious project in the pipeline in conjunction with a further large organisation which Mr Shaik believes could possibly outshine the Hopcraft project.

Despite these ambitious targets, Clifton Packaging still prides itself on retaining a small business ethos, in particular its flexibility to innovate and solve problems, and its focus on retaining cordial business relationships regardless of the size of the customer.
