The owner of a multi-million pound pharmaceuticals business has been named the Institute of Directors (IoD) East Midlands director of the year.
Dr Nik Kotecha OBE, chief executive of Morningside Pharmaceuticals in Loughborough, collected the award just days after joining the board of the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership.
Morningside supplies clients around the world with drugs and medical equipment.
Around 20 per cent of its annual turnover – accounting for around £10 million – comes from providing overseas aid.
Last autumn, it won a £1.2 million contract to supply emergency medicines to war zones in Syria and Iraq.
Dr Kotecha was praised by the judges for his vision of “making quality healthcare an affordable and accessible reality throughout the world”.
He also won the corporate responsibility and large company categories in the regional competition.
Shahid Sheikh OBE, managing director of Clifton Packaging, Clifton Packaging Group LTD.

Shahid Sheikh OBE, managing director of Clifton Packaging in Meridian Business Park, won both the international award and the medium sized company category.

His business supplies flexible packaging to food companies around the world.

The judges said: “Shahid has shown excellent strategic awareness in spotting the export opportunities and has a well thought through process for identifying and assessing ethical and like-minded partners.”

Other Leicestershire winners were Mike Hughes, chief executive of Loughborough’s Twenty Twenty, which helps young people develop their skills, who won the public/third sector category.
He was praised by the judges for his “clear leadership and strategic positioning”.
Marc Wileman, director of Enderby-based children’s science party business Sublime Science, was named the joint winner of the young director award.
Marc impressed judges with his drive and determination and for “making science awesome for one million children,” which saw Netmums vote the Sublime Science Party the best party in the UK.
Jason Chauhan, managing director of JC Metalworks Ltd, in Loughborough, was highly commended in the family category.
Ron Lynch, IoD East Midlands regional director, said: “All our entrants deserve praise for their achievements in a challenging business environment.”
All the winners go on to the IoD’s national awards, announced on September 22 at the Lancaster London Hotel.
