Focus and a clear vision are the secrets of my success

Shahid Sheikh OBE announced winner for IoD East Midlands 2018 Awards

COUNTY business people have been rewarded for their achievements at the annual Institute of Directors East Midlands Director of the Year awards.

Shahid Sheikh, managing director of Clifton Packaging – a Meridian Business Park food packaging business with a £19 million turnover in 2016 – was named as the region’s over all director of the year.

He was praised by competition judges for running “a truly multicultural company, employing people from many different nationalities”.

Mr Sheikh won the overall award along with the inclusivity category and jointly – with Simon Rice of Derby washroom products supplier HSG UK – the Innovation category.

On top of that he was highly commended in the global category of the awards.

Last year, he won the IoD East Midlands International award and the SME Medium Company category.

Some 130 guests attended the awards in Nottingham, and all the winners will go forward to the IoD’s national finals in London in October.

Mr Sheikh congratulated all finalists before sharing some of the secrets to his success. He said: “Focus, it’s all about focus and if I can do it then so can you.

“I have a very clear vision of where I want Clifton Packaging to go and because of that coupled with focus we are achieving it. It’s very exciting times at Clifton. However, I don’t do any of this on my own and I want to thank and share these awards with my whole team back at Clifton Packaging.

“We work together to achieve all that we set out to achieve whether that be in innovation, sales, export, turnover targets teamwork, vision, focus that’s the Clifton way.”

Pete Frost, managing director at Leicester digital marketing business Unity, and trustee of Norton Housing Support a Leicester charity providing accommodation and support for men and women with long term mental health issues was named non-executive director of the year.

Judges said: “Good application of Pete’s commercial knowledge and experience in ensuring the board considered future revenue and viability.”

Ashley Cooper, senior partner of Ashley Cooper Young Chartered Surveyors was highly commended in the innovation category. Since it was founded 10 years ago, his firm has established itself as an expert in the construction and property consultancy industry;’

Based in Mountsorrel, it is a specialist in primary care buildings, residential and student accommodation.

Martin Ruda, group managing director of Hinckley secure printing business Check print, was highly commended in the global director category.
